About Life Skills Programs
For over 40 years, life skills programs have been used effectively in addictions recovery and treatment. In 1967, the Canadian Government funded various initiatives to celebrate Canada's Centennial. The province of Saskatchewan used their funds to develop a highly effective and successful life skills program entitled Saskatchewan NewStart.

This NewStart life skills method of working with individuals included precise behaviour objectives and opportunities to practice these new behaviours. This program is commonly used in recovery houses and addiction treatment facilities. The "coaches" need very specific training in group facilitation and teaching problem solving skills. Including skills training has been proved to be one of the most effective methods to assist an addict or alcoholic adjust to a new lifestyle. Many do not have requisite skills to function effectively.

The training program for life skills coaches is open to any adult. The best candidates are those who have had life experience and can relate to their client(s). Rhodes Wellness College has been offering our Life Skills Instructor Program to individuals and organizations in recovery for the past 12 years.
