Frequently Asked Questions about the Counselling-Informed Advanced Coaching Certificate

          What is a Life Coach?

A life coach is a trained professional who supports individuals in identifying goals, overcoming obstacles, and creating positive, sustainable change in their personal or professional lives. Life coaching focuses on the present and future, helping clients build confidence, clarify direction, and take practical steps toward meaningful outcomes. Unlike therapy, coaching does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. However, at Rhodes Wellness College, our programs go beyond standard coaching by integrating counselling theories and techniques. This means students gain a deeper understanding of human behaviour, emotional processing, and interpersonal dynamics, equipping them to support clients with greater empathy, awareness, and skill, especially in complex or emotionally charged situations.

What are the benefits of becoming a life coach?

Becoming a life coach offers both personal and professional rewards. As a coach, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping others set goals, overcome challenges, and create positive change in their lives. Professionally, life coaching offers flexibility. You can work independently, build a private practice, or coach within organizations. It is also a scalable career, with the potential to specialize in areas like wellness, career transitions, relationships, or leadership. At Rhodes Wellness College, our training gives you not only coaching tools but also self-awareness and emotional intelligence, so you grow personally while learning to guide others with confidence and integrity.

What Can You Do With a Life Coaching Certificate?

Graduates of our coaching programs are prepared to launch careers as certified life coaches, wellness coaches, and specialized coaches in a variety of fields. You’ll be equipped to work with individuals or groups in private practice, corporate settings, wellness clinics, or as part of interdisciplinary teams. Many of our graduates start their own businesses, join existing coaching organizations, or integrate coaching skills into their current roles in leadership, healthcare, or education.

Will I Learn How to Start a Coaching Business in This Program?

Yes. Our coaching programs include practical training on how to start and grow your own coaching practice. This includes business planning, marketing strategies, legal and ethical considerations, client intake processes, and how to structure your services. We want you to graduate not only as a confident coach but also as a capable entrepreneur who knows how to attract and retain clients.

How can I get accredited with the ICF?

Rhodes Wellness College offers ICF-accredited training hours as part of our coaching curriculum. Upon completing the program, you’ll have the foundational training hours required to pursue your ICF credential through their designated pathways, such as the ACC (Associate Certified Coach) level. We also guide students through understanding the ICF’s application process, mentorship requirements, and ethics, so you’re well prepared to move forward with accreditation if you choose to.

Do You Need a License to Be a Life Coach?

No, you do not need a government-issued license to become a life coach. Life coaching is currently an unregulated profession in Canada and many other countries, which means anyone can technically call themselves a coach. However, completing a recognized training program and earning certification through a respected organization like the International Coaching Federation (ICF) adds credibility and professionalism to your practice. At Rhodes Wellness College, our life coaching programs are designed to meet ICF core competencies, helping you build a strong foundation and prepare for certification if you choose to pursue it.

What Will I Learn in a Life Coaching Program?

Our coaching curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including effective communication, goal setting, values clarification, motivational strategies, emotional intelligence, boundary setting, and ethical coaching practices. You’ll also learn about client assessment, creating action plans, and how to support clients through transitions, challenges, and personal growth. The program is highly experiential, giving you hands-on practice with real clients and classmates to deepen your confidence and skills.

Can I specialize as a grief, ADHD, addictions, or business coach?

Absolutely. The skills you gain in our coaching programs are highly adaptable and can be applied to a range of specializations, including grief, ADHD, addictions, business, youth, and more. Many students choose to focus their coaching practice on the populations or topics they are most passionate about. Our flexible, experiential approach encourages you to bring your own interests and lived experiences into your practice, and we provide guidance on how to tailor your services to a specific niche or client group.
