How to Become a Success Coach After Life Coaching School

Success coaching helps clients achieve things they may never have thought possible. Whether a client defines success as reaching new heights in their career, achieving a healthy work-life balance, or making the change to a line of work they find more fulfilling, the encouragement of a success coach can provide much-needed support. Success coaches help their clients set and achieve goals related to business, their career, or academics. They guide clients in forming strategies to accomplish their goals and provide accountability, advice, and encouragement (Prince, 2014).

If you’re goal-oriented and want to help others reach their full potential, becoming a success coach might be the perfect career for you. How can you get started in this rewarding field? Here’s a closer look at how to become a success coach after life coaching school.

Define Your Niche

Once you’ve completed your life coach courses, the first step to becoming a success coach is choosing your niche. A niche is the specific area in which you want to focus your attention within the field of success coaching. For example, you might want your niche to be helping women in business achieve work/life balance, or assisting young entrepreneurs to take their first steps.

Faris Khalifeh, quiet leadership coach and instructor at Rhodes Wellness College, shares his insights into the importance of defining a niche: “You become an expert in [your] field so you stand out more as a coach. If you are providing for everyone and you’re a generic life coach, it will be more difficult to stand out.” (Khalifeh, 2016)

Deciding on a niche can be a challenge. Faris Khalifeh recommends reflecting on your past experience to see where your strengths lie and to also consider where your own values are (Khalifeh, 2016). For example, if you have experience starting up a small business, coaching small business owners could be the perfect niche for you.

Start Building a Solid Client Base

After defining your niche, the next step to launching your career as a success coach is to start building your client base. In the beginning this could mean tapping into your own personal network for connections. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to spread the word about your business. Often people love to help.

As well as individuals, many businesses hire success coaches to work with their staff. A 2009 study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development surveyed a variety of organizations. What they discovered was that an astounding 90 per cent of those organizations reported using coaching in their business (Fromell, 2016). By reaching out to local organizations, you can grow your client base quickly after graduation.

Begin Marketing Your Services as a Success Coach

In order to reinforce your efforts in building a client base, you should also market your services and build an online presence. A great place to start is to have a website that promotes your business and personal brand (Khalifeh, 2016).

Creating professional accounts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms can also help you spread the word about your services. You can post interesting articles related to your niche on social media or even start blogging on your own success coaching website. According to Hubspot, professionals who make blogging about their company a top marketing priority improve their chances of having a positive return on investment by a factor of 13 (HubSpot, 2014).

The best way to maximize your online presence after life coaching school is to understand who your clients are and how to reach them.

“Let’s say a coach decided they wanted to work with youth and they know [youth] are on Snapchat.” Faris Khalifeh explains, “You focus your marketing channels on where your market is hanging out.” (Khalifeh, 2016) The more visible you are to your prospective clients, the easier it will be for them to find you and for your success coaching career to take off.
