Rhodes Podcast Episode 7: A Conversation with President Ben Colling

rhodes podcast ben colling

In Episode 7 of the Rhodes Podcast, host Jameson Dean sits down with Ben Colling, President of Rhodes Wellness College and the Vancouver School of Healing Arts. This in-depth conversation explores the college’s values-driven learning model, its evolving programs, and how Rhodes continues to shape compassionate, skilled helping professionals across Canada.

A Movement Rooted in Values

For more than 30 years, Rhodes has been guided by a clear philosophy: helping others begins with personal growth. Every program emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning, encouraging students to apply techniques to their own lives before working with others.

Ben reflects on what inspires him most about leading the college:

“I honestly feel part of a movement. Our students better themselves so they can better help others. That’s an incredibly inspiring environment to work in.”

This values-first approach creates a learning community built on trust, reflection, and shared purpose. Students learn to grow personally and professionally, developing confidence and the ability to support others in meaningful ways.

Experiential Learning That Builds Confidence

Unlike many traditional academic models, Rhodes places strong emphasis on practical, lived experience. Students don’t just memorize theories; they embody them. This means practicing the same skills they’ll use in their professional careers while exploring their own emotional and mental landscapes.

Ben explains that this approach allows students to witness transformation firsthand, in themselves, their peers, and eventually, in their clients. As a result, Rhodes graduates enter the field with the skills, confidence, and self-awareness to support others effectively.

Honouring Indigenous Teachings and Holistic Wellness

Rhodes’ learning model is built around a holistic understanding of health: emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. Since its early years, the school has drawn inspiration from Indigenous teachings such as the Medicine Wheel, which encourages balance and interconnectedness in all aspects of well-being.

Ben acknowledges this influence with deep respect:

“Our Indigenous friends encouraged us to lean in and utilize the Medicine Wheel as a lens for holistic education. It’s helped shape Rhodes into the unique college it is today.”

This perspective ensures that students not only develop practical skills but also learn to approach human wellness with humility, compassion, and cultural awareness.

Innovative Programs on the Horizon

Rhodes is expanding its impact through new and innovative programs rooted in the same core philosophy:

  • Animal Assisted Wellness Therapy — Developed with Carla Webb, this program explores the healing power of animal-human connection.
  • Holistic Leadership — A forward-thinking approach to leadership that focuses on emotional intelligence, purpose, and personal growth.

These programs reflect Rhodes’ commitment to evolving with the needs of students and communities while remaining grounded in its holistic, experiential foundation.

A Culture of Compassion and Growth

Throughout the conversation, Ben reflects on how working at Rhodes has changed him as a leader. He speaks openly about learning to separate the act from the person, embracing compassion and humility as guiding principles.

“We all have tremendous capacity and deserve compassion. Rhodes has taught me to see the human behind the act and approach people with empathy.”

This mindset influences the entire college culture. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to “lean in,” face challenges honestly, and grow together in a supportive learning environment.

Leadership Through Humility

Ben also shares how Rhodes has shaped his understanding of leadership. As president, he’s learned that true leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about listening, inviting dialogue, and creating space for others to grow.

“We all make mistakes. The key is to meet each other human to human, to stay curious, and to keep learning.”

This openness mirrors the learning journey of Rhodes students, who are encouraged to approach others and themselves with honesty and care.
