Want to Study Life Coaching? Here's What Relationship Coaches Do

life coach training course

The need for relationship coaching has never been more prevalent; 70,000 marriages end in divorce every year in Canada, which amounts to approximately 33 per cent of all first marriages (Feldstein Family Law Group, 2016). In addition, that number is growing year over year (Feldstein Family Law Group, 2016).

All forms of relationships take work. Some partners don’t have the important skills needed to make their once happy and healthy relationship function, long term. This is where relationship coaching comes in. Relationship coaches can play an important role in psycho-education. They can assist couples to learn and practice the skills necessary for success.

After a Life Coach Training Course, You Can Coach Various Types of Relationships

Relationship coaching is useful for romantic relationships and much more. Relationship coaches can choose to work with all types of clients in many different types of relationships. While marriage and dating coaching are two of the more conventional paths, relationship coaches can also work with single, divorced, and widowed individuals. They can also help foster stronger business relationships, family relationships, friendships, and more (Relationship Coach Institute, 2016).

Relationship coaches don’t have to work with both partners in a relationship. Sometimes, working with one person is powerful enough to make a difference (Noomii, 2010). While some coaching sessions will be more effective with all parties in the relationship present, others may not. It’s up to you to use your expertise and knowledge to collaboratively form a coaching plan that is best suited to your clients’ needs (YourTango, 2017).

Relationship Coaches Focus on Skills and the Future

Relationship coaching and couple’s therapy or counselling, while similar, have very different focuses. Couple’s therapy takes an approach that examines the past, previous traumas, and the root of emotional issues. Sometimes, individuals in couple’s therapy have underlying issues that require the expertise of a counsellor to work through (Noomii, 2010). Relationship counselling, on the other hand, assumes that the individuals being coached are emotionally ready and willing to focus on coaching (Relationship Coach Institute, 2016)

Relationship coaching takes a future-focussed approach. It is solution oriented, meaning that as a coach you will provide practical skills, goal setting, communication techniques, and conflict resolution strategies that will help your clients improve their relationships going forward (Noomii, 2010).

It’s important to keep in mind that relationship coaching and counselling can actually be very effective when used in tandem. While counselling helps clients come to terms with past traumas or negative experiences, coaching helps clients move forward and into the next healthy stage of their relationship (Relationship Coach Institute, 2016). For this reason, at Rhodes College, we recommend all coaches have counsellor training and vice versa.

After a Life Coach Training Course, Relationship Coaches Can Shape Their Own Career

You can conduct group webinars online, host coaching sessions through Skype or phone calls, provide email coaching, facilitate group seminars and workshops, open your own coaching office, meet clients in person, and more (Noomii, 2010).
