How to Become a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in British Columbia

how to become a registered massage therapist

Becoming a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in British Columbia is a rewarding career that blends science, healing, and human connection. As regulated health-care professionals, RMTs help clients reduce pain, recover from injuries, and support overall wellness. If you’re looking to join this growing profession, Rhodes Wellness College offers a pathway that’s flexible, innovative, and holistic.

Accredited Education: Your First Step

In British Columbia, RMTs must graduate from an accredited massage therapy diploma program that meets the standards of the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC), the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (CMTCA), and the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB). This is the essential first step before you can sit for the registration exams.

Rhodes Wellness College is proud to offer the first hybrid Registered Massage Therapy Diploma Program in B.C., which combines live online learning with in-person labs and clinics. This flexible format allows students to balance studies with work and personal commitments while still meeting all CCHPBC requirements for clinical and practical hours.

A Holistic Curriculum: What Sets Rhodes Apart

At Rhodes, massage therapy education goes beyond anatomy, physiology, and clinical sciences. Our program is enriched with holistic coursework drawn from our decades of expertise in wellness education. Students explore not only hands-on techniques but also the mind-body connection, communication skills, client-centred practice, and stress management strategies. This integrative approach prepares graduates to treat the whole person—not just the symptoms.

Hands-On Clinical Training with Support Every Step

Although part of your training is online, you’ll gain substantial in-person experience through supervised labs and clinical practicums. With small class sizes, personalized attention, and faculty deeply invested in your success, you’ll graduate both confident and clinic-ready.

The Pathway to Becoming an RMT in BC

Here’s how the process works:

  1. Graduate from Rhodes Wellness College’s Accredited Program – This diploma qualifies you to apply for registration with the CCHPBC.
  2. Apply for the Registration Examination – Submit your Rhodes diploma, photo ID, and fees through the CCHPBC Applicant Portal.
  3. Write the Exams – The process includes a written component, practical assessment, and the Law, Ethics, and Professionalism course.
  4. Provide Supporting Documents – This includes references, proof of liability insurance, CPR/First Aid certification, and a criminal record check.
  5. Gain Your License – Once approved, you’ll officially be a Registered Massage Therapist in British Columbia.

How Long Does It Take?

Most students complete the journey from enrolment to licensure in about two to two-and-a-half years. Rhodes’ hybrid format helps make this timeline more manageable for students who need flexibility without compromising on quality.

Life After Graduation

As an RMT in BC, you’ll find opportunities in wellness clinics, spas, physiotherapy and chiropractic practices, sports teams, and even private practice. Many RMTs value the flexibility and financial independence this career offers, with earnings that can grow significantly once established in the field.
